Tsoline Mikaelian is a Postdoctoral Associate at MIT. She received S.M. and Ph.D. degrees from the MIT Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics while working at the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) and the Systems Engineering Advancement Research Initiative (SEARI). She received the Honours B.Sc. from York University, Toronto, with a specialization in Space and Communications.

Tsoline’s research enables the creation of autonomous, networked systems that are robust to failures and capable of handling uncertainties. To this end, she has developed automated diagnosis and fault management software, and applied it to Earth Observing One and SPHERES spacecraft. She has also worked on automatic diagnosis and reconfiguration of hybrid vehicles sponsored by Toyota. More recently, she worked on the modeling, design and analysis of systems that have the flexibility to deal with uncertainties, such as networks of unmanned air vehicles, and developed real options methods for decision making under uncertainty that also consider a broader enterprise and managerial context of the system. She is currently exploring new methods for testing, verification and validation of autonomous and networked systems.

Tsoline’s work has led to several large research proposals that were subsequently funded at MIT. Prior to MIT, she worked at York University on a novel laser communication technology and at Spectral Applied Research, Inc. on characterizing new types of spacecraft sensors for fault-tolerance.

Tsoline enjoys teaching and has been a teaching assistant for several classes at MIT and York University. She is also the recipient of many awards, including the Amelia Earhart Fellowship Award, a Presidential Fellowship at MIT, and the Academic Medal of the Governor General of Canada.
