Lean Enterprise Value (LEV) Short Course
LEV Short Course: This three-day class provides an immersive experience in the concepts central to the LAI book Lean Enterprise Value (Murman et al, 2002). This course is built around the complex LEV simulation (described below). This course is intended to extend the thinking of leaders and change agents to the enterprise level.
Lean Enterprise Value (LEV) Simulation
The Lean Enterprise Value (LEV) simulation is a unique tool for demonstrating the value, and challenges, of implementing lean principles and practices at the enterprise level. It is a complete, flexible simulation of a complex enterprise, which allows hands-on lessons in lean improvement. Participants fabricate parts, process engineering design jobs, assemble, and support a fleet of Lego™ aircraft, to satisfy customer and corporate demands.
Each participant is in charge of a facility: an assembly plant, subcontractor fabricating plant, product development department, or service and support depot. A sophisticated economic system allows participants to track their performance and justify their decisions as they progress on their lean enterprise journey.
During the course of the simulation, participants learn advanced lessons in applying lean at the enterprise level, quantifying the value of lean improvements, and managing change in a complex, interdependent enterprise. The LEV simulation is a flexible tool that has been customized in a wide variety of ways. The simulation has four modules which can operate independently, or linked together to form a complex enterprise, depending on course teaching objectives.
Summary of LEV Content Modules
These modules are not as self-contained as the Lean Academy modules. They are designed to be used in conjunction with the full Lean Enterprise Value (LEV) simulation.
- Lean Concepts: Review of basic lean concepts and tools
- High Level Value Stream Maps: stitch together local VSMs using swimlanes (bottom up), creating high-level maps using SIPOC charts (top-down), enterprise-level value stream analysis and example pathologies
- Enterprise Metrics: Enterprise-level value streams, local and global cost and waste metrics, dynamic effects (balance, stability, synchronization), optimization
- Enterprise Architecture: Enterprise topology and flows, examples based on the simulation, Toyota principles and lean architecture concepts, flows, dynamic behaviors, metrics, interventions
- Just-In-Time Learning mini-modules designed to be used as part of exercises embedded in the LEV simulation: Value Stream, Capacity, ROIC, Change Planning, Kanban inventory control, Enterprise Views
